Rocky the GCN detection dog visited the E3P office last week to help us understand more about how detection dogs can be used for mitigation projects. Rocky has been highly trained to be able to sniff out the European Protected Species, and signal to his handler once he has found them. He has been trained to overcome his doggy instincts to play with the newts – preferring the tennis ball reward instead.
GCN detection dogs can be used during mitigation projects, by assisting to clear areas of newts quickly and efficiently. Traditionally a large area could take ecologists days to hand search for newts, whereas Rocky would make light work of it in just a few hours! Opportunities to save clients time and money are always explored by E3P, and we look forward to working with Wagtail on future projects.
