Last week, Stephanie Cox, Technical Director of E3P, had the privilege of attending the Remediation Society Conference 2024. Held at the prestigious National Brownfield Institute in Wolverhampton, this event brought together industry leaders, researchers, and policymakers to delve into cutting-edge advancements in brownfield regeneration and remediation.
In the heart of Wolverhampton, the National Brownfield Institute stands as a beacon of innovation and collaboration within the construction industry. With a focus on practical applications and partnerships, the institute is at the forefront of developing modern methods for revitalising brownfield sites. From pioneering research teams to influential policy developers and commercial service providers, the institute serves as a hub for driving forward the sustainable transformation of neglected landscapes.
One of the central themes of this year’s conference was the concept of “re-wilding brownfield.” This holistic approach considers not only the remediation of contaminated land but also emphasises ecology, landscape restoration, and biodiversity net gain. Discussions revolved around crucial topics such as carbon sequestration, infiltration techniques, and the multifaceted risk assessment challenges in brownfield redevelopment projects.
Among the enlightening discussions, one topic that resonated deeply with attendees was the science behind carbon sequestration. In the face of a looming climate crisis, understanding how to effectively utilise the carbon resources we already have on the ground is paramount. When we recognise that a significant portion of our carbon resources resides beneath our feet, it prompts us to question why we continue funnelling vast quantities of material into landfills. We must explore strategies to minimise this practice on our sites and harness the potential of carbon sequestration.
A highlight of the conference was the update provided by the RemSoc working groups. These dedicated teams are at the forefront of driving progress in brownfield regeneration practices. Stephanie expressed enthusiasm about the development of a practitioner’s guide to betterment during remediation, emphasising its potential to catalyse positive change within the industry. As engineers immersed in the realm of brownfield regeneration, the prospect of a comprehensive guide to enhance remediation processes is incredibly promising. We eagerly anticipate its evolution and implementation.
